This project was a combined effort by both my humanities and physics teacher to try and bring the two classes together. We were tasked with creating a rube goldberg machine that had a satirical meaning. Our rube needed to include all six of the simple machines including one challenge step; this challenge step could be a loopty loop, a time warp box, or a 720 spiral.

Reflection
This project helped me with my time management skills i've never had to build a school project completely from home. The greatest challenge for me was trying to be motivated to actually build my rube. I waited until the last week to actually start anything because I was convinced in my head that it would only take me two days to build it. I had to put a lot of effort into just rushing this project which shows in my final product i could have spent more time refining it and making it look good. However my greatest strength was eventually overcoming my laziness because I know some of my friends failed to do that and didn't complete their project on time. When i got started i really got started on this project and i put a lot of time into that one week trying to get everything done. |
Energy cannot be created or destroyed only transferred. You can see this happening in my rube on multiple occasions the energy in a falling domino is transferred to the marble which is then transferred to the wheel which is then transferred over to the lacrosse ball where it is once again transferred into the pulley cutting the rubber glove.
The six simple machines are as the following inclined plane, wedge, pulley, screw, lever, wheel and axle. In my rube the entire thing is on an inclined plane, a wedge/scissors is used to cut the glove, my 720 spiral is also a screw, it's hard to see but a little lever is what starts the wheel and axle when the marble hits it and the two pill bottles taped together were my wheel and axle. I did a 720 spiral for my challenge step to try and represent someone's life spiraling down while being on prescription drugs. |
Project description:
Throughout this project we researched the physics of waves and how they interact with the world mainly light waves. We experimented with camera obscuras and created pinhole cameras of our own. The final product of this project was taking photographs of some of these light phenomena with the knowledge we gained throughout our research and experiments. Project reflection:
My greatest strength during this project was time management throughout the second quarter of this year around when we switched to full online my time management skills were on a steep decline however for some reason in physics and throughout this project i was able to stay on top of it. I think this is partly due to me being interested in physics alone. I enjoy learning why certain things happen in the world. However my interest in the topic didn't stop me from getting confused with some of the subject matter. A lot of it was very confusing in the beginning of the project. At some points I didn't even know what we were trying to learn. Yet towards the end of the unit when we were doing a lot of lab/experiments I started understanding the concepts through the use of hand on learning. My number one take away from this project was that things don't always work as you would think. Learning about a topic like light which has physics unlike anything else that we know of is gonna be full of new and unexpected information. This will help me later in life by helping me keep my mind open to new things because some things aren always as they seem. Knowing that things don't always work as they seem has helped me grow as a scientist too. By again helping me open my mind to new things and to expect the unexpected. Being a scientist is about discovery not recreation and having an open mind can help you make those discoveries. Overall I feel I did a pretty good job on the project as a whole. I had a lot of fun with some of the stuff we did. And felt engaged in the topic we were learning about this project has definitely helped me grow as a learner and as a person. |
There is a telephone pole which stands up straight behind my backyard and I noticed when you look at the reflection of the telephone pole in the water if the water is unstable or has waves the straight line of the telephone pole will reflect the shape of a line with waves through it.
